Debt consolidation replaces several debts with one new loan if a lender actually funds it. It can lower the monthly payment by stretching the term, which can raise total interest. It can also fail to pay every card if the amount financed is smaller than the balances after fees. Newcomers who still have an ITIN, a thin file, or a visa-tied income should treat eligibility as product-specific. A lower payment is not proof the loan is cheaper.
Compare debt-consolidation listings after you have a balance list: debt-consolidation listings. Screenshot cash received versus the payoff amounts. The listing is not an approval.
Build the payoff list first
For each card or loan, write creditor, balance, APR from the statement, minimum payment, and due date. Sum the balances. That sum is the cash you need at the creditors, not the headline principal. If an origination fee is withheld, the principal must be larger than the sum or some account will remain open with a balance.
Ask whether the lender will pay creditors directly or send you funds. Direct payoff can miss a creditor if the name is wrong. Cash-to-you requires you to complete every payoff before you spend the remainder. Keep confirmation numbers.
Compare TILA boxes, not a blog table
A table that pairs “27.99% cards for 14 years” with “12.50% loan for 36 months” is a classroom illustration only if those rates are labeled hypothetical. They are not your quotes. Use the card statements’ APRs and the loan offer’s TILA box. The CFPB’s materials on paying off credit-card debt are the consumer-facing method: compare total cost and whether you will keep using the cards.
If you keep the cards open and spend them back up, you now have the loan and the cards. Utilization can rise, not fall. If you close the cards, you may lose available credit, which can also move a score. Neither path is a promise. Autopay the loan from an account that actually receives income. A missed consolidation payment is a new delinquency.
Work a conservative month: after rent, food, transport, and the new installment, is there a buffer if income is late? If the installment only fits when you assume overtime that is not in writing, the loan does not fit. Do not use a second loan to make the first installment. That is a stack, not a consolidation.
If a card has a 0% purchase promotion that still has months remaining, paying it off with a longer installment loan can throw away the remaining promotional window. Read that card’s TILA box and the remaining promotional balance before you request a payoff. Conversely, a card already at penalty APR is a different comparison. Ask the card issuer what APR applies to the balance you would refinance. Do not use a blog’s 27.99% stand-in. Keep the payoff letters and the first loan statement in one folder so you can see whether every creditor actually received funds.
ITIN, visa income, and inquiries
Ask whether the product accepts an ITIN. Ask whether income must be from a named employer on a specific visa. Ask whether the first check is a soft or hard inquiry. Do not invent an SSN. Do not apply to five consolidation lenders in two days. If a debt-settlement company asks you to stop paying creditors and pay them instead, that is a different product with a different risk; the CFPB has warned about settlement-company harm. This page is about a loan that pays creditors, not about stopping payments.
Cons / limitations
- A longer term can cut the monthly payment while increasing total TILA interest. Comparing only the payment picks the more expensive contract.
- A withheld origination fee can leave a card unpaid. You then have a loan payment and a card minimum in the same month.
- ITIN and visa-income rules are product-specific. A hard inquiry on a product that cannot take your identifier does not consolidate anything.

FAQ
Will consolidation raise my score in 30 days?
Not as a product feature. Utilization, inquiries, and new-account age move differently. Read the reports, not the app widget.
Should I consolidate one $800 card?
Maybe not. Origination fees and a hard inquiry can cost more than paying the card on its TILA APR. Do the arithmetic on the live disclosures.
Is a 0% balance-transfer card the same product?
No. It is a card with a transfer fee and a promotional end date. Read that TILA box separately.
