Car insurance for newcomers: how to compare quotes without U.S. driving history

Insurers may have limited U.S. driving and insurance history for a recent arrival, which can affect available quotes. Requirements and rating factors differ by state and carrier, so compare equivalent coverage rather than choosing on the premium alone.

Information to prepare

  • Your state driver-license status and prior foreign license
  • Vehicle identification number, ownership, and financing details
  • Address, expected mileage, drivers, and how the vehicle is used
  • Any documents the insurer accepts to verify prior driving or insurance history

Compare the same limits

Review liability limits, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, collision, comprehensive, deductibles, exclusions, rental reimbursement, and roadside assistance. State minimum coverage may not be enough for every household.

Use your state insurance department to check licensing and consumer guidance before buying. Never submit an inaccurate driving, address, or vehicle history to obtain a quote.
