Health coverage for international students and visiting family
International students and visiting relatives often need coverage for a fixed period, but their needs are not identical. A student may need a plan accepted by a school or visa sponsor. A visitor may need travel medical coverage for emergencies and an understanding of pre-existing-condition exclusions.
For international students
Ask the school for its written waiver requirements before buying an outside plan. Compare effective dates, mental-health care, prescriptions, emergency care, sports exclusions, maternity care, and the provider network near campus.
For visiting relatives
Travel medical products commonly have benefit limits and exclusions. Confirm whether the plan is primary or secondary, what happens during a pre-existing-condition event, how claims are filed, and whether evacuation or repatriation benefits are included.
