Your first 90 days in the U.S.: a practical money checklist

The first months in a new country involve many linked decisions: identification, an address, banking, credit, insurance, transport, and protection from fraud. Treat them as a sequence rather than applying for several products at once.

Weeks 1–2: documents and secure accounts

  • Keep immigration, identity, and tax documents secure.
  • Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication.
  • Learn which institutions accept an SSN, ITIN, passport, or alternative documents.

Weeks 2–6: banking and a first credit path

Compare account fees, deposit insurance, ATM access, international transfer costs, and identification requirements. For credit, start with a product whose eligibility you understand and avoid multiple applications in a short period.

Weeks 4–12: monitor and verify

Check statements, review credit reports when a file appears, and keep records of applications. Ignore services promising a guaranteed score increase or deletion of accurate negative information.
