Language App or Live Tutor: What a Newcomer Should Pay For First

A paid language app and a live tutor solve different gaps. An app can drill vocabulary on a commute. A tutor can rehearse the exact conversation you will have at a lease signing, clinic desk, or job interview. Neither replaces a qualified interpreter when accuracy is legally required.

Use official and community options first

USAGov’s English-class directory lists free and low-cost local and online courses. USCIS also points to community civics and English classes. Pay for a product only after you know which real-life conversation is still failing.

Compare the product, not the fluency promise

  • Does the next 30 days target one task, or a generic level test?
  • How much speaking practice is included, and is it with a person?
  • What is the price after a trial, and how do you cancel?
  • Are there PPC or “guaranteed fluency” claims? Those are warning signs.
  • Will you need an interpreter anyway for a medical, legal, or financial appointment?

When a structured product can help

If you already practice daily and still freeze in live conversations, a tutor marketplace can be the next step. If you need daily vocabulary for banking or housing and have little time, a structured course can be enough. Do not buy both on the same week.

italki is a pay-per-lesson tutoring marketplace. Lingzio is a structured course product. Both appear only through first-party /go/ routes when the campaign is live. They are not fluency guarantees and they are not immigration advice.
