How to Compare a Credit-Monitoring Subscription Before You Pay
A credit-monitoring or identity-protection subscription can send alerts when new accounts or inquiries appear. It does not erase accurate negative information, create a U.S. credit file by itself, or guarantee that a lender will approve an application.
Start with the official file, not the sales page
Federal law lets you review the reports that Equifax, Experian and TransUnion keep. AnnualCreditReport.com is the central request site described by the FTC and CFPB. Read that file first so you know what a paid product would be watching.
The CFPB’s credit reports and scores tools explain how to request reports, how scoring models differ, and how to dispute errors. A subscription that restates the same data is not a substitute for that review.
Compare the subscription, not the marketing headline
- Which nationwide bureaus are included, and how often the file is refreshed.
- Whether a score shown in the app is a VantageScore, a FICO score, or an educational score that lenders may not use.
- Monthly and annual price after any trial, plus how to cancel.
- What identity-theft insurance actually covers, including deductibles and exclusions.
- Whether alerts arrive by email, app, or mail, and what you must do next.
What a monitoring product cannot do
It cannot promise a higher score. It cannot force a lender to ignore a thin file. It cannot replace a police report or the federal recovery steps at IdentityTheft.gov if an account was opened in your name.
If the file contains errors, follow the CFPB’s dispute process with the reporting company and the furnisher. Paid “credit repair” that promises to delete accurate records is a warning sign.
When a newcomer might still want a paid product
Some people want daily alerts while they wait for a first card or loan to report. Others want a three-bureau view in one dashboard. Those can be legitimate reasons if the price and cancellation terms are clear. They are not required to “unlock” a credit file.
IdentityIQ is one paid three-bureau monitoring option we have reviewed for this site. Read the current terms on the operator’s site before you pay. A sponsored link below, if shown, is a first-party /go/ route and is not an approval.
